What does proofreading mean to you?
LHK Proofreading uses the term in its broadest sense, as understood by the majority of lay people, rather than in its strictest sense, as defined by publishers and the like. The range of documents that would benefit from a proofreading service is increasingly diverse, as are the authors.

For example,
- Businesses produce sales literature, annual reports, User Manuals or Instructions for Use documents, catalogues, websites... the list goes on. All of these reflect badly on a company if riddled with errors.
- Organisations may distribute event flyers, programmes, information leaflets, newsletters etc. Readers will have more confidence in the organisation if its literature looks professional.
- Academics are frequently called upon to present their work at conferences and meetings as well as publishing their research findings in journals. Unfortunately, presentation slides are often hastily prepared and not checked as rigorously as journal papers. Slides could often benefit from a proofreading service.
- Book authors do not necessarily have their work published in the traditional way now. The rise in self-publishing means that authors may need to source their own proofreading services rather than relying on a publishing house to carry out this step.
- Students are required to submit various written pieces of work including essays, dissertations and theses. Examiners will be distracted from the content if confronted with numerous spelling mistakes or grammatical errors.
- Individuals may need to produce any of the document types mentioned above. In addition, they may need to prepare a CV or an important letter.
Why is scientific proofreading different?
All fields of work have their own jargon to a greater or lesser extent. In science, many of the words used are quite different to those in everyday English. A scientific document needs a proofreader who is familiar with scientific or technical words and concepts. A high level of numeracy skills is also required in order to effectively proofread documents containing charts, diagrams and tables of data. LHK Proofreading can offer all of these benefits.
