Since 2017, LHK Proofreading has provided ongoing freelance services to Oxford University Press, copy-editing a leading journal in the field of antimicrobial therapy.
A number of learned societies continue to benefit from us proofreading/copy-editing documents such as conference booklets (programmes/speaker abstracts/poster abstracts etc.), member magazines and annual reports.
Other work undertaken is for individuals, recent examples including a PhD thesis written in LaTex, web content for a start-up company, report of a World Health Organization meeting and a job application.

The Task
To proofread and lightly edit a 1,789-word article with the title ‘Microbial Species: Fact or Fiction?’ In this piece of work, the author had a good command of the English language. He also had a clear understanding of his topic and could articulate ideas clearly. The main focus of the task was therefore compliance with the published house-style of the Society for Applied Microbiology (SfAM). Microbiologist is the quarterly magazine for SfAM members. Each issue has a different theme. Authors come from a diverse range of disciplines in the field of microbiology. Some of the contributors are prominent scientists who are also experienced authors. At the other end of the spectrum, some contributors are early career scientists and/or may have English as their second language (ESL). |

The Task
The first edition of Microbiology Nuts & Bolts was published in 2013. The task was to proofread and edit the entire contents in preparation for the second edition in 2014.
- Pink for comments relating to ambiguity, lack of clarity etc - Green for subjective alterations – discussed preferences Amended document was given to the author (with and without the amendments showing). |
Getting the book, Microbiology Nuts & Bolts, proofread by LHK Proofreading proved essential. A writer always sees what they thought they wrote...missing the blindingly obvious mistakes and overlooking the grammatical errors. Nobody sets out to write incorrectly but we do it because we are inattentive with words. I do my best proofreading after I’ve hit send! Fortunately, this time I sent it to LHK Proofreading before the printers! I’m delighted with the quality of the second edition of Microbiology Nuts & Bolts.

The Task
For those of us who are fluent in only one language, the ability to write a dissertation in a second or even third or fourth language is a significant accomplishment. Examiners, however, are human. They may be distracted, either consciously or subconsciously, whilst reading a technically accurate document if they come across unorthodox expressions or ambiguous terms. Marcial needed to have his MSc dissertation proofread and edited to do justice to the hard work he had put into both the practical and written elements. He had the disadvantage that his laboratory supervisor, though fairly fluent in English, was not a native English speaker either. The task was not to rewrite the manuscript; it was to ensure that it remained Marcial’s work, whilst helping him to tweak the text to satisfy the requirements of his examiners. |
Completing and finishing my MSc dissertation paper was really a challenge and LHK Proofreading greatly contributed in this endeavour. Thank you for the honest and thoughtful assessment. I would never hesitate recommending LHK Proofreading's impressive work to others.

The Task
The WC-Plus test does not actually exist. This product literature has been fabricated to illustrate some typical scenarios which have been encountered whilst proofreading real commercial literature. One important factor which needs to be taken into account for this type of proofreading is the reader's level of literacy and specialist knowledge. For example, instructions on how to perform a test need to be brief yet comprehensive. They also need to be unambiguous such that all potential users can follow them with ease. Confidentiality and discretion are of the utmost importance to LHK Proofreading and our clients. References are available on request. |
As a company we produce many publications for reference and marketing. Having recently started to use LHK proofreading, not only have we freed up valuable time in house, we have noticed an improvement in the quality, accuracy and content of our publications. We have no hesitation in recommending that other companies adopt a similar policy, and an independent external provider is certainly beneficial.
